Abiola Ogunbiyi is a screenwriter based in London, U.K.

Formerly an actress and performer, she received a BA (Hons) Musical Theatre from ArtsEd London, working for over a decade on stage and screen. Her stage credits include the West End productions of Mamma Mia! and The Book of Mormon, and the world premiere of Girls by BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko, as well as numerous shows across the U.K. and abroad.

On screen, Abiola played Maria in seasons 2 & 3 of Jamestown (Sky/Carnival Films), appeared in the film adaption of Matt Haig’s A Boy Called Christmas (Sky Cinema/Netflix), and in the Channel 5 miniseries Deadline. Whilst acting, Abiola began writing and producing short-form comedy content, including a pastiche of Beyoncé’s 7/11 music video; it was in the making of her comedy short Sexellence that Abiola committed to pursuing a writing career. Sexellence received awards and screenings at comedy festivals across the world, including Shoreditch House and Budapest’s Puskin Mozi.

As a screenwriter, Abiola was a finalist in the 2021/22 Netflix Screenwriters' Fellowship. In 2023, she was one of 9 writers selected for ITV’s Comedy Writers Initiative; this led to her first professional screenwriting credit, writing additional material for the ITV sitcom Piglets. As well as being in the most recent BBC Scripted cohort (2023/24), Abiola’s drama series The Heir was selected for the TorinoFilmLab SeriesLab 2024 program, and won one of the program’s two development awards.

Abiola is currently developing a feature film with EbonyLife & Green Door Pictures for Netflix, and her sci-fi short film for Jam Tomorrow/Lux Aeterna is now in production.

Abiola has written a number of articles for leading U.K. casting directory Spotlight, and from 2019 - 2021 ran a platform and workshops promoting well-being within creative professions. Alongside writing, she remains a passionate musician and dancer, speaks at panels focused on empowerment in the creative sector, and has proudly joined the members of her generation running half-marathons of their own volition.
